Sponsoring workers

Once a licence is in place, the practical work is in sponsoring individual workers correctly.

The role, the occupation code, the certificate and the employment terms all have to line up — and stay lined up as the employment changes.

Before you proceed

Where sponsorship usually goes wrong

  • an occupation code chosen for convenience rather than accuracy
  • certificates assigned before the role has been checked
  • workers doing something different from the role sponsored
  • changes actioned by HR before immigration is considered
  • record keeping that would not survive an audit

Check the role, not just the person

Most sponsorship problems start with how a role has been described. It is far cheaper to check that before a certificate is assigned.

Promotions, relocations, absences and resignations all carry sponsorship consequences, and several are reportable within days.
